Transvision VampEvery generation has their Marilyn impersonator. The 70s had Debbie Harry, in the 90s it was Courtney Love and for me as an impressionable young teen in the 80s it was Wendy James from Transvision Vamp. My first glimpse of her was in the video for “I want your love”. She introduced me to James Dean posters, Andy Warhol, leather jackets and blonde bombshells in tight pink dresses. Sure she seemed a little unstable and she wasn’t completely convincing in that role but who cares.

Admittedly my taste in music at the time was geared towards Debbie Gibson and Bros (she did pose in a picture with them) but I still enjoyed their music. The albums Pop Art and Velveteen still sound almost current and I like bopping along to them on my ipod.

So, Wendy James and Transvision Vamp, I salute your contribution to late 80s/early 90s music.
