What is it about Goths and Brisbane? The capital of what tourism Queensland calls “The Sunshine State” seems to have more than it’s fair share of cure loving, black nailpolished, blood red lipsticked vampire dwellers.
Don’t get me wrong, I find their looks quite striking and enjoy listening to Marilyn Manson and Robert Smith. I just don’t get why you would wear long black clothing in the middle of summer during a heat wave. Supposedly Brisbane has more goths than Melbourne or Sydney and if there was ever a place for goths, Melbourne would be very good candidate. The Brisbane goths even have a meetup group
So why Brisbane? Is it a way for teenagers to show how deeply unhappy they are or a not so subtle way of getting out of wearing swimming togs and tank tops. How do they deal with white makeup in the humid wet afternoon storms that is a constant of Brisbane summers?
I know that the trend has spread to the Sunshine Coast as there were a few swampys lurking around Nambour when I was growing up. Does the Gold Coast have them too? Does Melbourne actually have any?
These are all important questions that must be answered.
