I can feel a new gadget coming on. The shine of the vespa is still bright but of late I’ve been feeling very dissatisfied with the Fuji Finepix 2800 – which is actually Pauline’s birthday present so theoretically I don’t even own a camera. It’s night photos aren’t very good which we knew before it was purchased but didn’t mind because it had 6x optical zoom. I was eyeing off the Digital SLRs as their quality is drool worthy but my needs lean more towards the ultra-compact range that fit in my pocket. I know I’m never going to get the kind of photos dsankt and the Nighthawks do, but I want to try my hardest.
After some research on Digital Photography review I narrowed it down to the Casio Exilim EX-S500 and the Canon PowerShot SD400. Both are slimmer than an ipod, have about 5 million pixels and the ability to do some manual settings. The Casio doesn’t have an eye viewer but it’s 2.2″ lcd screen is a smidgeon bigger than the Canon’s. The Canon is thicker but not as long or wide as the Casio. Other than that there is little difference between the too. All that is left now is to see them in the flesh and decide which one suits me better. It’s a bit harder to judge the Casio’s photos as it has only been on the market for 2 months so there aren’t many owners displaying their goods.
If you are in the market yourself, I suggest that you check out the Australian Overclockers photography forum as they offer good advice and provide lots of links for online shops. I’ll let you know what I decide!
