I’ve been playing around with a beta version of Windows Vista for the last 15 minutes and I’m just so angry. I was all ready to give it a chance but it kept thwarting me. Tried opening Internet Explorer and I got warned about the dangers of phishing. Tried opening “Add New Hardware” and I got prompted for whether I want to allow this program to run. I just double clicked on you didn’t I??? FUCK OFF! Everything I tried to do was interupted by Windows Defender or Windows Firewall.
Don’t they realise that an operating system is meant to be an enabler for applications, not a hinderance? It’s like having an amazing singer like Ella Fitzgerald up on stage and while she is trying to sing the microphone keeps interupting saying “Ladies and gentlemen, I’m a microphone and I’m hear to make sure you get the best listening experience”. You end up having an experience of extreme annoyance.
Rant over, now I can say what I actually like.
The finder (oops I mean Windows Explorer) has had a make over that seems to be for the better. On the left hand side where you used to have all your drives are links such as documents, music, whatever. The navigation stuff is done up the top horizontally. It’s taken all the drive confusion away and actually concentrated on the reason why you are there. This is an idea stolen from the Mac which is why I probably like it. The photo viewer, calendar are applications I like as they were all stolen from macs too. Internet explorer is bearable because it was stolen from firefox. I’ll give them Media Centre as something they almost thought up themselves which is good – even though the xbox hackers probably got there first.
The new aero interface is not something I’m a fan of even though it too was based on the OSX interface. It just seems to bulgy for me, like there are things taking up space for no real reason. The gadgets were cool for about a minute, but disappear when you click on the desktop button which sort of makes them useless.
I was going to attempt to put vista on the intel imac, but after seeing it in action I’ve decided I can live without it for now. Not even the new eye candy could sway me towards thinking this new operating system is worth it.
Please microsoft… let Ella Fitzgerald just sing.
I’m wondering if there are any non “stolen” features of the software that you liked?
Maybe the only non stolen thing I liked is now when you right click on the desktop it says personalise instead of properties and it takes you to a screen where you can do a lot more than just display settings. This makes sense as this is usually the first thing everyone does when they log in to windows for the first time. 🙂
I found lots of these things bloody annoying but I guess microsoft are in the position damned if you do, damned if you dont.
you just crack me up !
I never would have imagined you could combine vista and Ella in the same rant – but my dear you get the cake ( It’s chocolate by the way).
Maybe MS could use her dulcit tones for some vista audio grabs.
