I suppose when you stay in a hotel that has 4 bars and a cinema you are likely to encounter a bit of raucous behavior. After the wonderful night sleep I’d had the night before I had forgotten there was a potential for this to occur, so when I was awoken by doors slamming in the room next door at 1am I was a little annoyed but not too much. Then, when I heard low chatter for the next hour or so I was a little more annoyed because I couldn’t get back to sleep but put that down to the fact that now I was awake and I noticed the chat more. However, when they started to have loud boisterous sex for 3 hours I got really annoyed because there was no way I could sleep through that.  Pauline and Mum were also awake through the whole thing and we did laugh about it until it was 2 hours later and they were still going at it. What occurred that night between our two rooms can be best described in the play by play I gave twitter as it occurred:

After the 1am wake up call we were treated to 2 hrs of a sex romp next door. Mum ended up knocking on the wall which shut them up. Funny!
And if u are wondering how thick the walls are, I could actually hear her say things like I’ve always wanted to try this. She was very vocal
Whoops, they’ve started again and this time they don’t care. They aren’t going to stop until they are satisfied. 🙂
It’s them vs us. Bouncing bed springs vs radio.
@djackmanson @digitiel stood at the wall and told them to get on the floor and put a sock in their mouths but strangely they ignored her
We have given up trying to sleep and I don’t think they are ever going to “succeed”
@agent_x I think at this point anything we say will just egg them on
@agent_x Not quite porno here, but I’m impressed by his stamina. She is running the show though. I think they just met.
@matthew_hall I wish! He must be drunk.
@agent_x Well we heard them come in at around 2.30am, so it’s quite possibly by the hour. At this point they are paying for 2.5 hours.
A crescendo has been reached! Is it a false dawn or will they start again? Stay tuned for the next installment.
I’ve been informed I’m wrong. They have actually been partying with others since 10pm but the fun for them started around 2.30am.
My mother is plotting her revenge right now for when they fall asleep.
Did I mention how weird it is to be hearing people have sex in the room next door while your mother is on a trundle bed in the room  with u?
It’s still not finished. She is still uhing and ohing. FOR CHRIST SAKE!!!
@cate3221 This happened to me the last time I was in America too. Thin walls on the west coast I think. East coast had no such issues.
Ok, she is still making noises. I’m only hoping this bit isn’t recovery time for him just so he can start again.
We have shower and silence. The session may have ended 3 hours after it began. At 5.30am I’m not sure if it is worth me going back to sleep.
The sex rompers next door are now asleep. Our first revenge is to play salt n pepa’s push it loudly  on the stereo against their wall.
Next song we are annoying the frisky neighbours with is mum’s choice. Oh What a Night by Frankie Valli

We were very vocal in our annoyance and knocked on the wall and yelled at them to shut up but they honestly didn’t care. Pauline truly did yell at them to put a sock in her mouth and get on the floor (to stop the bed springs from squeaking). We did try to get our revenge in the morning by playing music loud but it didn’t seem to stir them. Mum did other things too like when she had her shower she knocked on their wall at 7am. We packed up to leave and check out but before we left I wrote on the blackboard in their hallway that I loved staying here except for the loud sex next door. As we ate breakfast in the courtyard restaurant I eyed off everyone wondering if they were the mysterious sex fiends but decided none of them fit the bill. When checking out they asked if we enjoyed our stay and I said it was lovely except for the sex next door. The 3 girls at the counter seemed very shy and all covered their mouths when I said it and looked at each other. They said that the security guards had tried to quieten them down as there had been other complaints when the group of them had been there earlier in the night. I didn’t ask for a refund or anything but they also didn’t offer any compensation which I think may have been good form from the hotel considering they were aware these people were a problem. But hey, we got the requisite sex story we always get when we visit the West Coast so we were set.

The next two days didn’t have any accommodation booked so it was just a matter of us making our way down to San Francisco to meet up with Madonna, Kelly and Mat. Packed up the car again and directed it towards California and the Redwood Forests, but first we stopped at the outlet centre in Woodburn for an hour or so. I walked away with a new Samsonite duffle bag on wheels and a North Face jacket for my scooter rides in the rain. I needed a new bag since mine had a broken zipper and was close to overflowing. The others picked up some clothes and stuff while Pauline once again walked away with nothing. Knocking off the miles we only stopped again for a toilet break and taco bell near a town where we saw a house burning down. We like Taco Bell because you get tacos for $2 which is a cheap meal in anyones book. Mexican food connoisseurs will turn their noses at us, but hey whatever.

On the I5 to Grants Pass

We left highway 99 at Grants Pass after stopping for another toilet break at a rest stop in the middle of nowhere. Grants Pass had been built up in our minds to be a cute little town but we were disappointed by the sameness of it and pretty much drove through it without stopping. We may not have been in the right part of it to see it’s joys and instead saw a lot of Dutch Bros drive through coffee shops and cavemen. At Cave Junction we stopped at the Visitors Center looking for accommodation for the night. The Oregon Caves are nearby and we could have stayed in a lodge up there or we could push ahead to Crescent City to get an early start on the Redwoods the next day. We decided to push ahead to the coast and see what we found.

Welcome to Grants Pass, it's the climate don't you know

Obsessed with getting a photo of the snow capped mountains we almost missed noticing the town of O’Brien which amused Mum and I. Not long after the town we entered California after declaring to the rangers that we didn’t have any fruit or vegetables (kind of like what you had to do in the old days between NSW and Queensland). The drive then took us through the wonderful Jedediah Smith Redwoods State Park which was an unexpected delight of curvy roads, mountainous ranges, huge redwood trees and rocky rapids. There was virtually no one on the roads either as this was the road less travelled. We were so glad that we had decided to push ahead and enjoy this part of the road at dusk.

Emerging from the trees at Crescent City we directed the car straight ahead until we stumbled upon the Pacific Ocean and a park that overlooked it. This was our first view of the actual West Coast on this trip and it was full of the rocks that I expected to see. It was a real jolt after being in the forest for so long. It was freezing cold and windy when we got out of the car so we stopped long enough to admire the view and take some pictures then it was back in the car.

We had to find somewhere to stay for the night so we drove around looking for what we could find. Based on location and recommendations on trip advisor we went for the Light House Inn. Mum did the negotiation with the guy and we checked out the rooms before deciding. At that point we just wanted a place and were happy to see the big rooms and cleanliness – even if the design of the place went against all my preferences. These preferences being:

  1. I don’t like flowery bedspreads
  2. I don’t like places that face major highways
  3. I don’t like weird ugly kitsch in the lobby

But the staff seemed nice and it was only one night so I really didn’t mind. Plus we got breakfast included. The first night we don’t plan ahead and we break my accommodation rules!

Mmm… love the art work:

The guy at the counter recommended next door for dinner which was a restaurant in a chain hotel so we headed over there to eat after checking in. The food wasn’t that great but wasn’t that bad either and the decor was wood panel ugly but clean. The pea and ham soup was good though. I was still sick at this point so I kind of forced my way through the meal and headed back to the room before they’d even paid the bill. Had time for a bath and then bedtime, thoroughly glad we’d spent most of the day in the car which allowed me some respite.

Checked out of the sex school hotel and heading south. No idea where we are staying tonight.
Also, download the app tipper for your iPhone. Vital!
Did some outlet shopping in woodburn. Bought new luggage and a rain jacket.
First hotel we didn’t prebook and damn, it’s a floral bedspread! View of the harbour though.  http://twitpic.com/4tkn8
Reached California after going through the amazing redwood forests on the redwood highway. Happy that we are going to see some more tomorrow

Lynne was busy breaking stuff again, blew the fuse while trying to heat our room [in Portland].

Oh and the Lighthouse Inn guy lured us to the restaurant next door with the promise of complimentary shrimp cocktails but by the time we’d eaten we were too full to remind the waitress that we didn’t get the cocktails

That’s a very good representation with photos of the drive down to the redwoods trees

I make that same drive from the Portland metro area to hike there about every 8 weeks or so. The waterfall in your one pic is a spot where I pull over and hold my cup under for a drink. When it’s flowing.

A couple of times per year, I stay at the Curly Redwood Lodge. Big rooms and affordable.

You are so lucky to make that drive so often – as well as getting to live near Portland. It is a really beautiful area and nothing like where I live in Australia. It reminds me a little of the South Island of New Zealand too. If you ever get the chance you should try hiking the Milford Sound track.

Just happened to stumble upon your blog again.. Thanks for the tip. If you didn’t get a chance to see the October 2009 National Geographic magazine cover story on redwoods, maybe order one sometime, or check a library. I’d post the 44 min. video at Youtube, but I heard that it isn’t viewable outside the US at the present. Basically the Nat Geo Explorer show that was on last winter. Maybe you have seen the screen version. Cheers, MDV
